How to install curl and its utilities
=====================================

The ANSI C programs in the 'src' and 'utils' directories of the
curl release should be copied to the applications directory on your
system and compiled.

Under gcc, the GNU C compiler, the following format should be used to
compile all the C files (apart from no_link.c):

  gcc -o name name.c

For example:

  $ gcc -o curl curl.c
  $ gcc -o decurl decurl.c
  $ gcc -o sk sk.c

$ is the UNIX prompt. Once sk has been created, it needs to be moved to
the local machine's CGI scripts directory.

Due to no_link's use of the gd graphics library (which requires C's
maths library), its compilation is slightly more complicated:

  $ gcc -o no_link no_link.c -lgd -lm

I have also compiled these programs using cc.

Portability
===========

It should be straightforward to port these programs to other ANSI C
dialects. Perhaps the biggest problem is whether some of the less
common C header files are supported by every machine and dialect.

The core tools (curl, decurl, modtime and sk) use sys/types.h,
sys/stat.h, fcntl.h, fwh.h and dirent.h. The other utilities also
use some of these less common header files, so should compile if the
core tools can be compiled. The one exception is no_link.c which
utilises Thomas Boutell's gd graphics library. Details on how to
download this can be found in section 6.3 of the user manual
(see guide.ps or guide.txt).

Another issue is the use of UNIX tools: modtime calls touch, and
sk relies on fgrep. These may not be present in non-UNIX
environments.
